Mt Kilimanjaro National Park

Kilimanjaro National Park is located near Moshi, Tanzania. It is centered on Mount Kilimanjaro, and covers an area of 641 sq. miles.
Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa (19, 366ft), and one of the largest volcanoes in the world. It also is the largest single free-standing mountain mass in the world, rising 16,000ft above the surrounding plains. Kilimanjaro has two peaks: Kibo and Mawenzi. You ascend through five different ecological zones to reach the summit.

It's a natural heritage site since 1987, because of its exceptional natural beauty and its rare and endangered plants and animal species. Vegetation types vary from low to high altitude: montane forest, moorland, upland moor, alpine bogs and alpine desert.

Kilimanjaro is the world's highest free standing, snow-covered equatorial mountain. Images of the towering snow-covered cone rising majestically from fertile green foothills have become a powerful motif of Tanzania's extraordinary extremes. Few could deny a very distinct sense of awe when the cloud clears to reveal a glimpse of the towering peaks, shining bright in the equatorial sun.

Kilimanjaro represents a powerful life force for the local Chagga people and all those who have made their lives around this mountain, providing rich volcanic soils for agriculture and an endless source of pure spring waters.

Attractions and Activities
Mountain Climbing: Six usual trekking routes to the summit and other more-demanding mountaineering routes.

Hiking: Day or overnight hikes on the Shira plateau. Nature trails on the lower reaches.

Trout fishing: Visit the beautiful Chala Crater Lake on the mountain’s southeastern slopes and possibly go trout fishing.

Getting There
By Road: Driving distance is 80 miles from Arusha and about one hour’s drive from Kilimanjaro airport.
