Nairobi Safari

Nairobi aptly known as the "Safari Capital" of the world is the capital and largest city of Kenya. The city and its surrounding areas form the Nairobi Province. The name "Nairobi" comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nyirobi, which translates to "the place of cool waters". A bustling and vibrant city, Nairobi is one of Africa's major cities: the UN's fourth 'World Centre', East Africa's commercial and aid hub, and a significant capital in its own right. Easily the largest city in East Africa, Nairobi is also the youngest, the most modern, the highest (at 1700 m) and the fastest growing. With a population of approximately 2 million people, Nairobi came into being in May 1899 as an artificial settlement created by the European builders of the East African railway at Mile 327. Apart from being the safari capital of the world, Nairobi is an excellent base for travel, being just nine hours by road from the Indian Ocean Coast. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is 15 km southeast of the city; the train station is in the city center and the city is served by a wide range of taxis and public transport. Trust us there is plenty to do here before or after your safari.

Founded in 1899 as a simple rail depot on the railway linking Mombasa to Uganda, the town quickly grew to become the capital of British East Africa in 1907 and eventually the capital of a free Kenyan republic in 1963. During Kenya's colonial period, the city became a center for the colony's coffee, tea and sisal industry. Nairobi is also the capital of the Nairobi Province and of the Nairobi District. The city lies on the Nairobi River, in the south of the nation, and has an elevation of 1661 m (5450 ft) above sea-level.
